Lecture 1 Flashcards
What 3 things automatically happen when you set a goal?
- Focus attention
- Implicitly know you must apply effort
- Know you must persevere
What are the failure rates for new years resolutions?
1/4 fail at 1 week
45% fail at one month
80%-90% fail by 1-2 years
What are the two best predictors or whether or not someone will stay with a resolution?
Readiness
Self efficacy
(confidence)
What is the most common reason people give for failing at new years resolutions?
Factors beyond my control
What are the most common New Years Resolutions?
Quit smoking, manage weight, exercise more
According to Baumiester what is Self Control and what ingredients are required?
Self Control: the capacity to over-ride one’s typical way of responding
- Standards: Starting point. Set goals that are clear and specific
- Monitoring: to catch problems and make adjustments to fix them
- Strength: Inner resource commonly referred to as “willpower” it can be measured and is a highly limited resource that can be depleted
What are some common mistakes people make when setting goals?
- Not specific
- Too many goals
- Conflicting goals
- Avoid instead of Approach oriented
- Not optimally challenging
- Not measurable
What does SMART stand for?
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time framed
What is the difference between Achievable and Realistic?
Achievable: is it something that is under your control? Goals related to other people ex: unrequited love is not achievable
Realistic: Do I have the capability to achieve this goal at this time with my current ability
What did Koestner recommend adding to SMART?
a second A for Approach oriented (I will eat healthy instead of I won’t eat junk food)
How many times does it usually take before a New Years Resolution succeeds?
5-7
