Q

What basketball event does Koestner believe scarred him for life?

A

Playing at Maddison square garden as a senior.
He was the person who was left unguarded and Koestner couldn’t make the shot because of too much pressure. Lost by 30 pts and lost his position as a starter. Never wanted to play after that

Q

What is Scanlon’s Model of Sports Commitment?

A

Explains why some kids stay with sports and others don’t

Commitment= desire and resolve to continue sports participation

Function of 5 factors that determine if this resolve will be higher or lower:

  1. Sports enjoyment
  2. Involvement Opportunities (example: opportunities that come out of being involved in the sport: mastery, fun, extrinsic things like recognition)
  3. Personal Investments: (time, energy, money etc.) Koestner doesn’t necessarily agree and believes there will be conflict
  4. Involvement Alternatives
  5. Social Constraints (norms and expectations. Scanlon originally thought that if there were high expectations they would keep you in the sport but now she thinks the opposite. Interpreted as pressure)

Q

What does Koestner think about the notion that we need to teach kids to deal with competition because it’s a part of life?

A

he doesn’t think it’s true, he thinks that competition isn’t helpful for our important roles in life as a spouse parent or friend and that there is already so much focus on competition in our society that there doesn’t need to be more
