Questionnaires Flashcards
Questionnaire
A self report technique that investigates people’s attitudes beliefs and opinions about a topic. It is more flexible than interviews as an interviewer is not needed. It is suitable when a large number of people need to be surveyed at one time
Close-ended questions
Questions designed with a pre-set list of answers for the respondent to choose from
Open ended questions
Questions designed without pre-set responses, but allow the respondent to answer freely, using prose.
Correlation
A way of analysing relationships between variables
Strengths of Questionnaires
Inexpensive way of gathering information from a large sample
Ethical as people can choose not to complete them
Close ended questionnaires produce quantitative data which is objective and easy to analyse
Open ended questions allow the respondent to have freedom
Weaknesses of Questionnaires
The response rate for questionnaires is relatively low as people may not have the time or inclination to complete it and send it back
Close ended questions can make people feel as if the right option isn’t available
Open ended questions are difficult to analyse and are subjective
