Cognitive explanation of depression Flashcards
What is the cognitive theory of depression?
States that depression can be explained by thought processes influencing behaviour. It suggests that negative and irrational thinking causes depression,
Ellis’ ABC model
Ellis suggests that there are 3 stages that might lead a person to develop depression; activating event, beliefs and consequences.
A negative event is the activating event and this can lead to a rational or irrational belief which can lead to a health or unhealthy negative emotion
Strengths of cognitive theory?
It recognises that events can cause depression unlike the genetic explanation which claims that if you have a certain gene you are more likely to become depressed; less reductionist
It has been applied to therapy as cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the leading treatments for depression ; real world applications
Weaknesses of cognitive theory?
It is difficult to know the role of irrational thoughts as it can be a cause of depression or a symptom of being depressed
They may be other causes of depression that do not involve thought processes for example postnatal depression has a lot to do with hormonal changes
