How does depression affect individuals
Increasing the risk of suicide because the feelings of worthlessness and sadness in depression can make people feel as if they need a way out. It has been suggested that 10-15% of people with severe depression will commit suicide.
How does depression affect society
One example is the amount of work missed by patients, The health and safety executive estimated that in 2014-15, 9.9 million days of work were missed because of stress, depression, or anxiety associated with work. There are cost implications for the company as they have to cover their workload
Incidence of depression over time
There is a feeling that more people are diagnosed with depression now than in the past. Martin Seligman reported that 1980s people were 10x more likely to be diagnosed with depression than in the 1940s. A report estimated that by 2026, 1.45 million will be diagnosed with depression. Jean Twenge found that young adults in 2007 were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with depression than in 1938. This could suggest that modern life for this age group is particularly stressful.
