Correlation Flashcards
Correlation
It is a technique designed to analyse the relationship between 2 variables
Positive correlation
As one co-variable increases, so does the other co-variable e.g. If time studying and grades are co-variables with a positive correlation, the more timey you study, the higher your grade
Negative correlation
As one co-variable increases. the other co-variable decreases. E.g. If time playing games and grades are co-variables with a negative correlation, The more time you play games, the lower your grade.
Strengths of correlations
They are cheaper and less time consuming than experimental research.
They are useful for investigating a topic that would be difficult to study experimentally for ethical reasons
Using co-variables rather than manipulation is less interventionist and more ethical
Weaknesses of correlations
Cause and effect cannot be established as we cannot confirm that one variable causes another or that there isn’t a third variable involved.
