Pulmonary Function Prac Flashcards
what is spirometry used for?
it is used to measure lung volumes by recording the amount of inhaled and exhaled air
what is inspiratory reserve volume?
air that can be received by maximal contraction of the lungs
what is vital capacity?
volume of air flowing through the airways at each maximal inspiration or expiration
what is tidal volume?
volume of air flowing through the airways at each inspiration or expiration
what is the expiratory reserve volume?
air that can be exhaled by maximal contraction of the lungs
what is residual volume?
air that still remains in the lungs (still contained in the lungs)
what can restrict the diaphragm during inspiration?
pregnancy or a full digestive tract can restrict diaphragm during inspiration (decreasing V T)
because resistance increases resulting in a decreasing tidal volume
what effect does physical activity have on resp system?
physical activity elevates both respiratory frequency and VT (tidal volume)
what is the normal tidal volume for a horse?
14-15ml/kg BW
what is the normal tidal volume for a cat?
7-10ml/kg BW
what is the normal tidal volume for a dog?
10-15ml/kg BW
