Psychological problems presenting as GI disease..
stress, depression, anxiety, somatisation, mental state examination, eating disorders
What is somatisation?
The manifestation of psychological stress by the presentation of bodily symptoms
What drugs can cause somatisation problems?
cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, anti depressants
What is refeeding syndrome?
Starving for a long period of time and refeeding very quickly can make them very ill - electrolyte shift
How has the body adapted during starvation which makes it accustomed to refeeding syndrome?
low expenditure of energy
adapted starvation and
atrophic gut, heart and muscles
Why is refeeding with carbohydrates dangerous?
rapid insulin rise and electrolyte shifts
How should refeeding be done after a period of starvation?
correct fluid depletion
thiamine
slowly progressing feeding
replace deficiencies of nutrients and minerals
