Histology of the GI Flashcards
What are the 4 basic tissue types?
connective, epithelial, neural and muscle
How can you tell the number of epithelial layers? what are the 2 names for the number of layers?
nuclei
simple = 1, stratified
What type of epithelial do you base the shape of?
top layer
What are the 3 tissue shapes?
squamous, columnar and cuboidal
What is the characteristic appearance of submucosal glands?
round white holes filled with mucous in the submucosa
What are peyer’s patches and how do they appear in histology?
Groups of lymphocytes in the tissue
purple clusters
How does the oesophagus appear histologically?
non keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
top 1/3 skeletal muscle and as you move down is smooth
mucous glands in submucosa
What is the extra muscle layer in the stomach?
oblique
Where are the gastric pits found exactly histologically?
lamina propria
What are parietal cells and what colour do they stain?
pink - secrete HCL
What are chief cells and what colour do they stain?
blue - secrete pepsinogen
What are 3 characteristics of small intestine histology?
villi, crypts of lieberkuhn and peyers patches
What are found in the duodenum?
brunners glands in submucosa
Are lots of peyer’s patches characteristic of jejunum or ileum?
ileum
Name some histological characteristics of large intestine
long crypts which do not stain due to mucous, no villi, thick mucosa and 3 bands of teniae coli
