Proximal Tibia (Plateau) Fractures Flashcards
1
Q
Likely cause if young?
A
High energy injury
2
Q
Likely cause if osteoporotic?
A
Low energy injury
3
Q
What is proximal tibia fracture?
A
Split in bone and/or depression of articular surface
4
Q
If there is a valgus injury?
A
- Lateral plateau fracture
- Failure of MCL
- Failure of ACL (?)
5
Q
If there is a direct blow?
A
- Proximal tibia and fibula fracture
- Injury to common peroneal nerve (foot drop)
6
Q
Varus injury?
A
- Medial plateau fracture
- Potential LCL rupture
- Stretch injury to common peroneal nerve
7
Q
Investigation of proximal tibia fracture?
A
CT scan: plan surgical fixation
8
Q
Treatment of proximal tibial fracture?
A
- Reduction of articular surface + rigid fixation (plates and screws)
- Also usually need some grafting
- Early motion
9
Q
Treatment of high energy fracture?
A
- may require external fixator spanning joint first (swelling resolve)
- Then open reduction & internal fixation
