What is hallux valgus?
A
Medial deviation of 1st metatarsal
-Lateral deviation of the toe itself

Aetiology of hallux valgus?
A
Female> male
- Familial tendency
- Increase with age
- Footwear
- RA & other inflammatory arthropathies
- Neuromuscular disease, MS, Cerebral palsy

Signs/symptoms of hallux valgus?
A
- Pain due to joint incongruence & widened foot: inflamed burse over medial 1st Metatarsal= bunion
- Great toe & second toe rub
- Severe cases: hallux may override 2nd toe

Conservative treatment of bunions?
A
- Wearing wider & deeper shoes to prevent painful bunions
- Spacer in first web space to stop rubbing

Surgical treatment of hallux valgus?
A
- Osteotomies to realign bone
- Soft tissue procedures to tighten slack tissues & release tight tissues
- NOT FOR COSMETICS
