Aetiology of hallux valgus?

A

Female> male

  • Familial tendency
  • Increase with age
  • Footwear
  • RA & other inflammatory arthropathies
  • Neuromuscular disease, MS, Cerebral palsy

Signs/symptoms of hallux valgus?

A
  • Pain due to joint incongruence & widened foot: inflamed burse over medial 1st Metatarsal= bunion
  • Great toe & second toe rub
  • Severe cases: hallux may override 2nd toe

Conservative treatment of bunions?

A
  • Wearing wider & deeper shoes to prevent painful bunions

- Spacer in first web space to stop rubbing
