Patellar Instability Flashcards
1
Q
What way does dislocation always occur in patellar instability?
A
Laterally
2
Q
What ligament tears when patella dislocates?
A
Medial patellofemoral ligament tears
3
Q
Predisposing factors to patellar instability?
A
- Ligamentous laxity
- Female
- Shallow trochlear groove
- genu valgum
- Femoral neck anteversion
- High riding patella (patella alta)
4
Q
Investigation for patellar instability?
A
X-ray
5
Q
What would be seen on patellar instability x-ray?
A
- Small opacification: osteochondral fracture: medial facet of patella strikes lateral femoral condyle
- Lipohaemarthrosis can be seen
6
Q
Treatment of patellar instability?
A
- Physiotherapy to strengthen quadriceps
- If recurrent dislocation is frequent:
- Tibial tubercle transfer
- Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction: tendon autograft
