Protozoa and Diseases Flashcards
What are protozoa?
- Single celled parasites
What are the different types of protozoa?
- Ciliates
- Flagellates
- Amoeba
- Apicomplexans (Sporozoans)
Describe ciliates
Have tiny hairs for locomotion
Describe flagellates
Whip like flagellas to propel them in their movement
Describe Amoeba
Movement is by pseudopodia
Describe apicomplexans (sporozoans)
Gliding locomotion
What is toxoplasma gondii?
-Zoonotic Disease caused by protozoa, which causes congenital defects, infections affecting cardiac muscle, brain lungs and the liver
What is the transmission route for Toxoplasma gondii?
- Ingestion of oocysts in faeces
What is tritrichomonas?
- A disease caused by protozoa in cats, which is hard to treat.
- Causes profuse watery intermittent diarrhoea
What is giardia?
- A disease caused by protozoa and transmitted by contaminated water sources
What are the clinical signs of giardia?
- Watery diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Abnormal GI signs
How is giardia diagnosed?
- Examination of faecal samples
What does coccidia cause?
- Intestinal mucosa
- Watery diarrhoea
- Flatten villi, leading to poor absroption, weight loss and diarrhoea
How is coccidia diagnosed?
- Faecal smear and staining with acid fast stain; the oocysts should stain red
What is encephalitozoon cuniculi?
- A protozoan disease in rabbits
What are the clinical signs of encephalitozoon cuniculi?
- Neurological disease
- Renal disease
- Ocular disease
How is Encephalitozoon cuniculi treated?
- Panacur
- Hutch/run hygiene
