Proteins Flashcards
atoms commonly found
carbon, O2, hydrogen, nitrogen
what are AA
- molecules made of atoms which are the small compoents of proteins
- there is 20 common AA
- every AA has different biochem properties
what determines protein type
the structure and combination of AAs
the 4 protein structure
primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary
Primary structure
sg chains of AAs (polymers) held together via peptide bonds
secondary structure
protein chains containing sulphur or hydrogen resulting in either: alpha helix (sulphur) or beta pleated sheet (hydrogen)
teritary structure
2 folds of polymer chains causing interactions between peptide chains and the envrioment resulting in ionic/disulphic/hydrogen bonds & hydrophobic interactions
quaternary structure
4 sub-units of tertiary structures which interact with each other causing bonds to form between them
