Protein synthesis (part 2, 13) Flashcards
What is the role of the genetic code in DNA?
The genetic code in DNA provides the cell with instructions for the making of proteins.
What is protein synthesis
The process of making proteins.
Synthesis is the combining of small molecules to make larger molecules.
What are proteins
Proteins are a group of chemical substances that play many important roles in living organisms
List the 4 groups/types of proteins
Primary - chain of amino acids joined by peptides
Secondary - amino acid chain forms sheets or spirals
Tertiary - more bending and folding of sheets and spirals
Quaternary - two or more chains are joined
What are proteins made from?
Proteins are made from amino acids
Why is synthesis of proteins an important part of cell metabolism
Because proteins make up much of the structural material of a cell
The types of proteins a cell can make are determined by what?
Genes
Define the term transcription
Transcription is the process by which the mRNA is formed using the code in a DNA molecule.
Define the term translation.
Translation is the production of a protein using the information that is coded in the mRNA molecule.
What is a Condon
Each group of three bases heat is the code for an amino acid is called a Condon.
What bases does the Condon AUG contain
Adenine, uracil and guanine.
