Musculoskeletal System - Skeleton Flashcards
List the functions of the skeleton.
- protection of vital organs
- movement
- RBC production
- storage of mineral salts and fats
- support
Where is periosteum found and how would you describe it?
Periosteum is found on the outer surface of the bone. It is a dense, white, fibrous covering.
Why is bone classified as connective tissue?
Connective tissues consist of cells separated from each other by large amounts of non-cellular material called matrix. In bone, inorganic salts are deposited in the matrix, increasing the rigidity and straight, thus making it the hardest of the connective tissues.
What does compact bone consist of?
Osteons or Haversian systems
Name the 2 types of skeletons and what hey are comprised of.
Axial - consists of the nervous system and rib cage
Appendicular - the limbs (arms and legs)
What is a joint?
The site at which 2 or more bones come together
List the joints.
- Fixed/fibrous
- cartilaginous/ slightly moveable
- synovial/freely moveable (b/s, hinge, pivot, gliding, condyloid)
Why are freely moveable joints also called synovial joints?
Because there is a synovial cavity between the articulating surfaces of the bones.
What is osteoporosis?
When the loss of bone mass becomes sufficient to impair normal functioning (caused by ageing)
How do we prevent osteoporosis?
- we need an adequate calcium intake
- vitamin D
- exercise
