Cells Flashcards
What is the function of lysosomes?
Lysosomes break down materials that are taken into the cell or break down worn-out organelles
What is the function of ribosomes?
Site for protein
What is the function of the golgi body?
They modify proteins and package them in vehicles for secretion from the cell (garage truck)
What do cells do?
They maintain life processes and require input of materials and the removal of waste to support efficient functioning of the cell.
Name the 2 types of cells and how they differ.
Prokaryotic
- no nucleus
- simple structure and no organelles surrounded by a membrane
- unicellular with one, circular chromosome (DNA)
eg. bacteria and archaebacteria
Eukaryotic
- one true nucleus
- nucleus stores DNA
- complex structure with membrane-bound organelles
List 3 functions of the cell membrane.
- selectively permeable to ions and water molecules
- protective barrier from surrounding cells
- supports/holds the shape of the cell
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum?
The changes between the paired membranes are used for storage or transport of materials.
What is the function of centrioles?
They are a pair of cylindrical structures that are involved in the reproduction of the cell.
What advantage does having cells so small in size provide for the human body?
- large SA and volume ratio
- increases rate of diffusion/substances enter and leave the cell more efficiently.
