Reproductive System Flashcards
What are gametes?
They are sex cells that are produced in specialised sex organs, termed gonads.
What is a zygote?
The fusion of a male gamete and female gamete at fertilisation results in a single cell, called a zygote, from which the new individual develops.
What are your primary and secondary sex organs and what do they produce?
Primary - gonads, produce gametes.
Secondary - the reproductive system of humans
NOT FINISHED
What’s the function of the scrotum?
Protect, hold and support the testes.
Where is spermatozoa (sperm) produced and what temperature does it’s process require?
Within each testis the make gametes, spermatozoa are produced. Production and development of soeem requirees a temperature that is about 2 degrees lower than the normal body temperature.
How is spermatozoa maintained?
Sperm production takes place at 2 degrees lower than normal body temperature. Therefore, exposure to cold results in the contraction of smooth muscle fibres in the wall of the scrotum, moving the testes to closer to the body. If necessary, the same muscles relax, moving the testes away from the body to keep them cooler.
In each testis, they are divided up into between _______ and _______ ________ or compartments, filled with fund tubes called ____________ tubules.
200, 300, lubules, seminiferous
Where are clusters of interstitial cells located and what do they secrete?
Located between the seminiferous tubules that secrete testosterone.
What is the epididymis?
It is a highly folded tubule that fits against the rear surface of each testis.
What is semen and what is its function?
Semen is a liquid which nourishes and aids the transport of sperm.
Semen is a mixture of secretions from 3 glands. List them and what they secrete.
Seminal vesicles - located behind the urinary bladder, secrete a thick fluid that is rich in gars and make up about 60% of its volume.
Prostate gland - where the 2 vasa deferentia join the urethra. It secrets a thin, milky, alkaline fluid that.
Bilbo-urethral glands (Cowper’ glands) - located beneath the prostrate. They secrete clear mucus.
What causes the penis to erect?
The penis has a rich blood supply. This erectile tissue has a large number of sponge-like spaces, which fill with blood during sexual arousal, causing the penis to enlarge, stiffen and become erect.
What are the primary sex organs of the female? What do they produce?
The ovaries. They produce female gametes, the ova (or eggs).
