Tetracyclines: TETRACYCLINE/DOXYCYCLINE

  1. Indications
  2. MOA
  3. SEs and contraindications
  4. Other
A
  1. Doxycycline: acne rosacea, trachoma, adult inclusion conjunctivitis
    Minocycline: acne vulgaris
  2. Inhibits protein synthesis at the 30s ribosomal subunit: Doxy alters the configuration of oil glands & decreases the release of FFA
  3. Pseudotumor cerebri, bone growth retardation, teeth discoloration.

Minocycline: blue sclera, pigmented cysts on conj.

CI: PREGNANT WOMEN
Tetracycline: RENAL FAILURE

  1. Doxycycline is safe in patients with renal failure, is eliminated in fecal matter instead of kidneys
