Protein structure Flashcards
peptide bond
condensation reaction. covalend bond between the hydroxy and amino groups of. flat plane. only movement is 2 twists at either side of alpha carbon
protein structure heirarchy
primary
secondary
tertiary
quaternary
Primary protien structure
purely the chain of amino acids, no structure. only the order of amino acids
Secondary protein structure
beta sheet and alpha helic. local folding. folding at the alpha carbons, not the R groups yet. hydrogen bonds. (also random coil)
Tertiary protein structure
final shape of protein. ionic and hydrophobic affect (get hydophobic residues in centre of protein)
Quaternary
multiple proteins come together to form a larger system
homologous: same subunits
heterologous: different subunits
maintaining shape
hydrogen bonds
hydrophobic interactions: oil like side chains that don’t like water
ionic interactions
disulfide bonds:
post translational modifications
zinc finger motiff
chaperone proteins that help folding
zinc finger
small local fold with a zinc ion, stabilised by cysteine and histidine. extra force to hold some proteins together
Domains for proteins
a section of a protein that does something and can be present in multiple different proteins
what is a protein
a ribosome synthesised polypeptide chain of amino acids (and other elements/modifications), that under certain solvent conditions, performs functions according to its 3D structure
