Protein Flashcards
what are proteins
proteins are body building foods. They are made up of Carbon, Hydrogen,Oxygen and Nitrogen. Some also contain Iron, Sulphur, phosphorus. The end product of protein digestions is amino acids.
Classification Of Proteins
Complete- First class proteins
Incomplete- Second class proteins
Classification of Amino Acids
Essentials-the ones the body cannot produce
Non-Essentials-the ones the body can produce.
Sources of protein
Poultry
Milk
Beans
Pork
Cheese
Deficiency diseases
Kwashiorkor
Stunted Growth
High biological value proteins
These are proteins that contain all the Indispensable Amino Acids (IAAS) in sufficient quantities which are said to be HBV. They can also be called complete proteins and are mainly found in animal sources e.g Meat, Eggs , Milk etc.
Low biological Value proteins
These are proteins that lack one or more of the IAAS, they are said to be
LBV. They are also known as incomplete proteins and are found mainly in plant source e.g Wheat, Rice, Oats, Peas, Lettuce, Nuts etc
