Movement in and out of cells Flashcards
What is diffusion
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration , to an area of of lower concentration. They spread out due to chance.
What are Cell Membranes
Partially Permeable-meaning that only some particles can pass through Eg: oxygen, amino acids, water and carbo dioxide.this is because their particles are small enough to pass through the membrane. Materials that cant pass through include: protein Eg Starch.
what effects the rate of Diffusion Or Membranes
Concentration Gradient
Temperature
Distance
Surface Area
Size Of the particle
how does diffusion help living organisms
-Obtain many of their requirements
- get rid of waste products
- carry out gas exchange for respiration
Facts
All particles move randomly at all times. This is called the Brownian Motion.
The energy for diffusion comes from that movement.
What is Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution across a partially permeable membrane.
When this happens the water is moving down its concentration gradient.
Facts on Osmosis
When a cell is placed in a solution with a dilute solution, what moves into the cell through osmosis. These water molecules push the cell membrane against the cell wall increasing the turgor pressure in the cell making the cell turgid(basically when a lot of water is absorbed by a cell). A cell is placed in a concentrated solution, water will move out of the cell by osmosis causing them to be flaccid.
What is Active Transport
Active Transport is the movement of molecules against a concentration gradient using energy from respiration .Molecules are actively transported though a cell membrane from regions of low concentrations to regions of higher concentrations,
examples of Active Transport
Uptake of ions by root hair cells
Uptake of Glucose
Facts on Active Transport
Energy is needed because particles are being moved against a concentration gradient, in the opposite direction from which they would naturally move (by diffusion).
