What is Ascribed status?
Ascribed status are given to people by their group or society and people usually have little control over them e.g age , sex, ethnic group, social class etc.( they are given to the at birth) e.g. nepo babies
what is ageism?
Ageism is discrimination against someone based on their age.
What is Achieved status?
a status that individuals acquire through their own effort. e.g. teacher or engineer.
what is a master’s status?
this is the most important status in a person’s interactions and relationships with others. Sex and age(especially for children) are often master statuses.
Similarities of Ascribed and Achieved status are:
They are based on social hierachy
the people at the bottom of the system both face inequality and discrimination.
the systems often include heredity status/privilege.
Differences between Ascribed and Achieved Status:
Some are open to mobility while in slavery it is extremely limited
Some allow termination while some don’t.
Some may have legal components while others don’t.
