The project request process can be formal or informal, depending on the organization. You may have a process that requires a formal written document describing the project goals and justification, or you may experience what I like to call drive-bys—the project your boss tells you about in the 30-second elevator ride to the lobby. Regardless of who initiates a project request or how it’s initiated, the organization must review it and make a decision on a course of action.

The high-level scope definition
defines project management as a series of processes that are executed to apply knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to the project activities to meet the project requirements. These processes have been organized into five process groups: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. Each process group contains at least two individual processes (some have many more) that have their own inputs to the process, tools and techniques, and outputs. For example, the Develop Project Charter process is grouped within the Initiating process group. It has five inputs, two tools and techniques, and one output (the project charter).
