Project+ Study Notes 19 Flashcards
??? is the stage where great teams end up. This is where the team is productive and effective. The level of trust among team members is high, and great things are achieved.
??? refers to breaking up the team after the work is completed and returning the team members to their functional managers and teams.
Performing / Adjourning
is a set of activities or exercises designed to get a diverse group of people to work together in an efficient and effective manner. It helps them to form social bonds and identify common interests, and it can help clarify the roles and responsibilities of each team member.
Team Building
The first meeting you should have with any new team member, and at the beginning of every project, is the ??? This is where you discuss the following: their role on the project, due dates, performance expectations, team interactions, industry standards and regulations that must be followed, and your expectations of their work quality. You’ll want them to know the best way to contact you and that you are available for any questions they may have.
expectations-setting meeting
may include a session developed by the project manager, formal training provided by an outside company, or training from an internal PMO on the standard methodologies, tools, and templates all project members are expected to use.
Project management training
is a temporary way to resolve conflict. In this technique, the areas of agreement are emphasized over the areas of difference, so the real issue stays buried. This technique does not lead to a permanent solution. ??? can also occur when someone attempts to make the conflict appear less important than it really is. ??? is an example of a lose-lose conflict-resolution technique because neither side wins.
Smoothing
One person forces a solution on the other parties. Although this is a permanent solution, it isn’t necessarily the best solution. People will go along with it because, well, they’re forced to go along with it. It doesn’t mean they agree with the solution. This isn’t the best technique to use when you’re trying to build a team. This is an example of a win-lose conflict-resolution technique. The forcing party wins, and the losers are forced to go along with the decision.
Forcing
is also called problem-solving and is the best way to resolve conflict. One of the key actions you’ll perform with this technique is to go on a fact-finding mission. The thinking here is that one right solution to a problem exists and the facts will bear out that solution. Once the facts are uncovered, they’re presented to the parties, and the decision will be clear. Thus, the solution becomes a permanent one, and the conflict expires. This is the conflict-resolution approach project managers use most often and is an example of a win-win technique.
Confronting
sometimes known as withdrawal, never results in resolution. This occurs when one of the parties gets up and leaves and refuses to discuss the conflict. It is probably the worst of all the techniques because nothing gets resolved. This is an example of a lose-lose conflict-resolution technique.
Avoiding
This involves both parties communicating, listening, and asking questions. Sometimes negotiating uses a third party who has no vested interest in the outcome and is neutral regarding the solutions. This third party helps all parties reach an agreement. For example, negotiating is a technique often used by collective-bargaining organizations. Negotiating can be a win-win, win-lose, or lose-lose technique depending on how the negotiations are conducted and on the outcome.
Negotiating
meeting is generally held after the project charter is signed. However, in some cases you may not have all the project team members assigned at that time. If that’s the case, it’s a good idea to hold off on setting up the ??? until the majority of the team members are assigned. It is also common to conduct two ??? to avoid this problem. One meeting is held after signing the project charter, and another one is held to kick off the Executing phase of the project once all team members are assigned.
