A

25 students arrived and sat at the lunch counter in shifts.This eventually rose to over 300 students working in shifts and it spread to other segregated lunch counters

A

Some white southerners joined CORE and SNCC

The sit ins attracted significant media coverage and many new protesters

Showed the importance of publicity

There was alot of support for black and white people in both the north and south and more demonstrations started occuring

A

In 1961 CORE activists decided to ride buses from the north to the deep south on ‘Freedom Rides’ to test if desegregation was happeneing

A

They reached Alabama but the governer there spoke out against them and Klan and WCC members swore to stop them then on the 15th may they reached Anniston Alabama over 100 KKK members surrounded it slashing the tyres and smashing the windows and setting it on fire

What happened to the second bus with freedom riders

A

They didn’t know what had happened in Anniston and when they arrived they were pulled off the bus and beaten up.They then got back on and were beaten up again in Birmingham .The Birmingham cheif of police told the police to not stop KKK members

Why was the Freedom Rides an embarrasment to the goverment

A

They had tried to desegregate things and bring peace however news coverage on the attacks showed how there was seemingly no peace in the south

What did the SNCC do after the first freedom rides

A

They were determined to not let the KKK win so organised their own freedom rides from Nashville to Birmingham.They were met by an angry mob so the federal goverment was forced to escort them to Montgommery where they were attacked by a mob of over 1000 white supremacists.

A

There were over 60 volunteered freedom rides.On 1st novemeber 1961 the federal goverment said federal officers would enforce desegregation if the states didn’t abide and the bus stations began to be desegregated

What happened when James Meredith attempted to apply to the University of Missisipi

A

James Meredith re applied to the university of missisipi after being rejected before because he was black.The supreme court ordered Missisipi to accept him but they refused and physically barred him from entering

What happened after James Meredith was refused entry to the Uni of Missipi

A

He returned to register on 30th september accompanied by federal officers and a mob of over 3000 attacked the federal officers.Riots began and many innocent civillians died or were injured.Eventually Kennedy sent in federal troops who stopped the rioting

He registered on 1st october and was guarded by federal troops his whole year
