What is a production aid?
It is something that will aid (help) us in production. It can improve the speed and accuracy of production.
What does production aid do?
- Greater productivity and quicker production
- Simplifies more complex processes
- Reduced costs
- Increased accuracy, quality and tolerance
What are examples of production aids?
- Templates
- Moulds
- Formers
- Measuring
- Measurements/reference points
- Patterns
- Die cutters
- Jigs
What are templates?
This is something to cut around to produce a shape indentical to it. This can include cards or timbers.
Where can templates be used?
It can be used in commercial or one-off manuafacture
What are moulds?
It is a hollow shape used when casting metal or a plastic resin
What is a former?
A rigid shape that it is used so other materials take its form. A softened material takes on the shape of a former.
Where can measuring be used in terms of production aids
Can be used in commercial and one-off manufacture. A range of tools to aid is accurate measuring. Examples can be a ruler, protractor, gauge etc.
What are measurements/reference points
This is a point where measurements are made from. It is identified by any marking out processed. If needed, the reference point will be machined first so it is accurate and all measurements from the DATUM.
What is a datum?
It is a fixed starting point of a cut.
What are patterns?
Patterns are replicas of the product that is to be made. The accuracy of the pattern is directly related to the quality of the product to be made.
What are die cutters?
Shapes in card can be created in a number of ways. The traditional way is to use a hollow die, which works in a similar way to a pastry cutter.
What are jigs?
A device that is specially made to perform a specific part of the manufacturing process. A guide for tools to cut/drill or position correctly. ALWAYS MENTION IN BATCH PRODUCTION.
