Different Types Of Product Finishes Flashcards
Polyurethane Varnish
It adds a glossy finish to the material during prinitng or afterwards. Most common finishing process on paper and broad products. It is a liquid coating that goes on with a brush.
Teak oil
Oils are applied to enhance the natural oils already in the wood. Teak oil is usually for oily hardwoods such as teak (usuaaly on yachts). It is applied by a brush and protect timbers from the sunlight.
Anodising
Process used to increase the thickness of a natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. Protects against corrosion but enhances aesthetic qualities of a product. Durable
Electroplating
Apply one or more layers of a metal by passing positive charged current containing dissolved metal ions and a negatively harged electrical current through the part to be plated. It can be done in all kinds of metals. Results in a smooth, streamlined texture.
Galvanising
It can be used on steel parts that are rusted. Steel is dipped into molten zinc which gives the surface a grey colour. This can be used in outdoor products such as steel yates and fencing.
Plastic powder coating
It involves spraying electrostatically charged particles of powder around a substrate. The particles of powder are held on a substrate by an induced (electrostatic) charge. Nylon-reinforced practice is an example.
