Environmental, Social And Economic Challenges Flashcards
Who have shared responsibilities on a product?
Designer, Maker, Retailer and Consumer (talk about this in an exam)
How to reduce the negative impacts of a product into an environemnt?
Careful design and effective management of the production process can substantially reduce the impact that a product has on the environement.
How do designers limit the waste in a manufacturing product?
Designers need to understand the challenges of using raw materials and the processes available to limi the amount of waste in a manufacturing product.
What is deforestation?
The cutting down of trees to use for timber and create grazing space for animals.
How do designers tackle deforestation
- Source materials from sustainability managed forests such as FSC.
- Consider fast-growing softwoods rather than hardwoods.
What is global warming?
The increase in the average temperature of the Earth:s atmosphere, land and sea
What is so significant about Carbon Dioxide?
Increase in Carbon Dioxide levels leading to potential Global Warming.
Why is global warming thought to occur?
- Burning of fossil fuels
- Use of vehicles in transportation
- Land clearing
- Agriculture (farming)
How do designers tackle this?
- Choosing different materials
- Using alternative energy to power machines.
- Use less materials
- Consume less power
- Design products that can be recycled at the end of use.
What is fair trade?
Identifies products that have been brought fairly.
Important points of fair trade
- Often more expensive - this is due to the need for farmers and workers to gain extra profit and investment from buyers
- Producers are all based abroad- therefore the ethical benefit could be offset by transportati9n costs, CO2 used in transport and so on.
- Can make a product more appealing - there is an increasingly eyhically conscious consumers.
