Probability and significance Flashcards
What do statistical tests show?
Significance
What is a null hypothesis?
“there will be no significant difference…”
What does a significant result mean we can do to the null hypothesis?
Reject it
What statistical level is usually used?
0.05
What does statistical level 0.05 mean?
The probability of the observed effect is equal to or less than 5% due to chance
If the statistical test has an R in its name, what does the calculated value in relation to the critical value to be significant?
Greater
If the statistical test has no R in its name, what does the calculated value have to be in relation to the critical value to be significant?
Less than
What is a one tailed hypothesis?
Predicts the direction of the results
What is a two tailed hypothesis?
Predicts significant difference but doesn’t say what direction
What is a type 1 error?
When the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted when it should have been the other way around because the null is true
What is a type 2 error?
When the null is accepted but it should have been the reverse because the alternative hypothesis is actually true
When are we more likely to make a type 1 error?
When the level of significance is too lenient
When are we more likely to make a type 2 error?
If the level of significance is too stringent
