Mann-whitney test Flashcards
When would you use the Mann-Whitney test?
There is only one result for each participant as no participant appears in both conditions
Data from the two conditions can be put into order of size
What values does the Mann-Whitney test give you?
Two observed values
U1 and U2 - one for each of the samples
Out of U1 and U2 which value becomes the U value you use?
The lowest value
There are two Mann whitney tables, which one do you use?
Depends on whether you have a one tailed or a two tailed hypothesis
How do you calculate the critical value to compare to in the Mann whitney test?
look at how many RPS there are in the first and then how many RPS there are in the second and go along the top row and side column of the table you need to find the critical value
What conclusions can you draw if the U value is equal to or less than the critical value in the Mann whitney test?
The results are statistically significant
Reject the null hypothesis
Accept the alternative hypothesis
What conclusion can you draw if the U value is greater than the critical value in the Mann Whitney test?
The results are not statistically significant
Accept the null hypothesis
Reject the alternative hypothesis
