Inferential statistics Flashcards
What is inferential testing?
Statistical procedures that make predictions about populations from mathematical analysis of data taken from samples
What is a level of measurement?
The level of data produced by a researcher which affects which statistical test will be chosen
What are the three levels of measurement?
Nominal
Ordinal
Interval
What is nominal data?
Form of categories
It is discrete in that one item can only appear in one of the categories
What is ordinal data?
Involves ranking data in place order with rating scales often being used to achieve this
What is the order of levels of measurements from least informative to most informative?
Nominal
Ordinal
Interval
What is interval data?
Data that is based on numerical scales that include units of equal, precisely defined size
Is ordinal data subjective or objective?
Subjective
What three things do you look at to decide what statistical test to use?
- Whether it is a difference to relationship
- What level of measurement the data is
- What experimental design has been used
What two types of designs are there?
Related
Unrelated
What are types of related designs?
Repeated measures
Matched pairs
What are types of unrelated designs?
Independent measures
When would you use Chi-squared?
Test of difference / test of correlation
Unrelated design
Nominal data
When would you use Sign test?
Test of difference
Related design
Nominal data
When would you use the Mann-Whitney test?
Test of difference
Unrelated design
Ordinal design
