Pre operational
What are the two pre operational stages? What ages do they occur?
Pre conceptual - 2 to 4
intuitive thought stage - 4 to 7 (mostly influences school age)
What occurs during pre conceptual phase?
Increasing development of language
They are egocentric and experience animism vs artificialism
Pre conceptual phase - what animism vs artificialism?
They believe inanimate objects have lifelike qualities (thinking a teddy bear can be sad)
Artificialism is them thinking natural phenomena like mountains are created by humans
Pre conceptual phase- what is egocentric?
have a difficult time seeing any point of view other than their own
What occurs during intuitive thought stage?
Experience centring
Prelogical thinking - not yet capable of logical operations or reasoning
Intuitive thought stage - what is centring?
Focusing on one aspect of a situation and ignoring others
Ex: water poured from one glass to another (focuses on only height and not that the width of the glass got smaller)
How is preschoolers language development?
Includes both understanding of language and expression of language
What happens to children who have a hard time expressing themselves?
Throw tantrums and other acting out behaviours
What is normal development dependent on?
Infant’s ability to see, hear, understand, remember, socially interact, and have oral motor skills
What should screen time be limited to?
One hour a day
