What happens during puberty?
Reproductive organs become functional
Secondary sex characteristics develop (hair, breasts, voice, period, increased muscle mass, etc)
When does a growth spurt occur?
Around 18 years (final 20% of growth occurs)
What’s common at this age?
Acne and oily skin
When do hormonal changes occur in boys?
9 1/2 - 14 years
What occurs during puberty for boys?
- shoulders widen, voice deepens, shoulders pectoral muscles enlarge
- hair begins to grow on face, chest, armpits, and pubic area
- genitals increase in size, pigment changes occur, erection and nocturnal emissions
When does hormonal changes occur in girls?
6 months to 2 years before they occur in boys
When do girls typically get their period (menarche)?
10 to 15 years
What occurs during puberty for girls?
- breasts enlarge
- fat deposited to hips, thighs and breasts
- activities requiring body mass and high level of physical activity may delay period
