Posture reactions Flashcards
What are posture related reactions?
Complex processes involving spinal reflexes and coordination mechanisms important for correct posture and movement.
What is examined during a posture reaction test?
- ascendant pathways
- pressure, tension and tactile receptors in joints and muscles
- descendant pathways
What does the investigations provide information about?
CNS impairments (damages) and the rough location of the reflexes within CNS.
How will the “ walk on front limbs” test look in the case of lesion in CNS?
Delayed movements and dropped nose towards the ground
How can you test the telencephalon function if the limb walk is normal?
By moving of the head backwards –> can not rely on vision, must rely on proprioreceptive information to balance movement
What can a decreased correction movement imply during the limb hopping test?
Lesions in spinal cord, brain stem and telencephalon can caused a decreased reaction.
What is hypometria?
decreased correction reaction
What is hypermetria and how is it caused?
limb hopping test
An excessive reaction –> caused by cerebellum lesions
How is the reaction for animals with spinal cord impairments ?
(limb hopping test)
Not able to stand or hop
What is a normal reaction in the support reaction test?
1 phase : animal balance body weight
2 phase: animal performs short steps (when gravity moves backwards) –> other reactions are pathological
How can the vestibular system be tested during the stand up reaction?
By closing the eyes of the animal
How is the normal reaction of the ihstmus tonic test?
Flexion of back limbs and extension of front limbs.
How is the response governed in ihstmus TT?
By cooperation of the vestibular apparatus, ihstmus muscles and neck receptors.
What is physiological reaction for the correction reaction?
Return to normal position within 0,5 seconds.
What can give a false negative result?
Long pressure and fixation
