Estral cycle Flashcards
How long does the Mice’ estral cycle last?
4-5 days
Which characteristic phases doe the cycle consist of?
Proestrus
Estrus
Metestrus
Diestrus
Ho can the stages of the estral cycles be determined?
By vaginal cytology
Other changes than in sexual organs?
Behavioural changes
Animals can be divided into?
- polyestrus –> estrous cycles throughout the year ( cow, pig, mouse, rat)
- Seasonally polyestrus –> have multiple cycles, but only during a specific period of the year ( horse, sheep, goat, deer)
- Monoestrus –> only one cylcle a year (wolf, fox, bear)
How can the phase of the reproductive cycle be determined?
By assessing the presence of leukocytes and nucleated and cornified epithelial cells
DIestrus?
Mostly polymorphonuclear leukocytes and some epithelial cells –> functional corpus luteum
Proestrus?
Mostly nucleated and cornified epithelial cells, can be some polymorphonucleated leukocytes
Estrus?
Mostly cornified epithelial cells. Can se a few nucleated cells if it is early estrus. (Mating period)
Metestrus?
cornified epithelial cells, and leukocytes, some nucleated epithelial cells. –> formation of corpus luteum
