Functional parametres of lung ventilation Flashcards
What is respiration?
A process of gas exchange between an organism and its external environment
What does respiration refer to?
Gas exchange in the lungs, gas diffusion into the blood and expiration of CO2.
What does respiration also involve?
ventilation, gas diffusion through the alveolar membrane and perfusion
What is important to enable import and export of gases in the alveoli?
Sufficient blood circulation in the lung tissue.
What is respiratory frequency?
number of inspirations and expirations (respiratory cycles) within one minute
How can the respiratory frequency be quantified?
In to two approaches:
- observation –> abdominal movement, count frequency
- Auscultation –> listen by stethoscope, count frequency
What is ventilation?
The air flow in the respiratory system. It involves inspiration and expiration.
What is inspiration?
In breathing by the use of the respiratory muscles. Active process requiring energy.
What is Relaxed expiration?
Breathing out, a passive process that is enabled by lung elasticity and thorax plasticity. No energy!
Whisch muscles allow inspiration?
Diaphragma and intercostal muscles.
What types of respiration do we have?
Abdominal (Ru) and costal respiration (Eq, Ca)
What does it mean that the respiration frequency fluctuates?
Depends on the age, body size, gender.
And also mental/physical exercise, gravidity, metabolism intensity, temperature…etc.
