Posture Flashcards
What is posture?
The position adopted by the body at rest and during motion (both static and dynamic)
What factors influence posture?
Developmental (bone growth vs. muscle growth) Disease Nutrition deficiency Environmental Psychological
Define posture?
The relative alignment of the various body segments with one another
Why is good posture important?
It protects the supporting structures against injury
So that muscles function more efficiently
Allows for easier breathing
Reduces recovery time
What is lordosis?
Increase in cervical/lumbar curve
What is kyphosis?
An increase in the thoracic curve Greater than 50 degree curve is considered abnormal Head forward Curved chest Rounded back
What is scoliosis?
Lateral deviation of the spine
80% of cases idiopathic (no known cause)
Structural and non-structural
What is structural scoliosis?
Occurs from unknown factors
Often from trauma
What is non-structural scoliosis?
A temporary change in spine curvature
Caused by an underlying condition (leg length discrepancy)
Define gravity?
A force that attracts a body toward the centre of the earth or towards any other physical body having mass
Define a lever?
A rigid bar or mass which rotates around a fixed point (axis/fulcrum) when force is applied
What would be the rigid mass?
The bone
What would be the axis/fulcrum?
The joint
What is the force?
Muscles
What are the functions of levers?
To overcome a larger resistance than the force applied
Offer mechanical advantage
Increase the distance and speed that a resistance can move
Achieved through an effort greater than the resistance
