Posterior Triangle of the Neck Flashcards
What are the movements of SCM?
Extension
Flexion
Lateral rotation
Lateral flexion
What are the attachments of middle scalene?
Transverse processes of C2-7
To rib 1 behind the subclavian artery groove
What structures cross the SCM?
External jugular vein
Great auricular nerve
What is this muscle?
Levator Scapulae
What are the roles of the different parts of the trapezius?
Ascending part - depresses the scapula
Transverse part - retracts the scapula
Descending part - elevates the scapula and rotates the glenoid cavity
What veins form the external jugular vein?
The posterior auricular vein and posterior division of the retromandibular vein
What is this muscle?
Trapezius
What muscle is shown?
Sternocleidomastoid
What are the movements of levator scapulae?
Can elevate scapula
If shoulder is in a fixed position, it can laterally flex the neck
What are the attachments of the anterior scalene?
Transverse process of C3-C6
To scalene tubercle of rib 1
What is the innervation of levator scapulae?
C3, C4 and C5 via the dorsal scapular nerve
What is the function of the scalene muscles?
To flex neck (bilaterally)
Tilt head to the same side (unilateral)
Elevate the upper ribs
What are the borders of the posterior triangle of the neck?
Anterior Border = posterior border of SCM
Posterior Border = anterior border of the trapezius
Base = clavicle
What muscles make up the floor of the posterior triangle of the neck?
Splenius capitus
Levator scapulae
Scalene muscles
Omohyoid passes through
What nerve crosses anterior scalene?
Phrenic nerve
