16
Q

What are signs of pleural effusion?

A

Decreased chest expansion
Stony dull percussion note
Decreased breath sounds on affected side
Decreased vocal remits + vocal resonance

17
Q

Which tests can be performed?

A

CXR
USS
Aspiration
(Biopsy (if aspiration inconclusive))

18
Q

What would be seen on CXR with a small pleural effusion?

A

blunted costodiaphragmatic angles

19
Q

What would be seen on CXR with a larger pleural effusion?

A

Water-dense shadows with concave upper corders

20
Q

How can a pleural effusion be resolved?

A

Thoracentesis

Tube thoracotomy

21
Q

Virtually all cancers may metastasise to the pleura. How do you treat malignant effusions?

A
Palliate symptoms
Repeated pleural taps
Drain and/or pleurodesis
Long-term pleural catheter
Surgery (abrasion / pleurectomy)
22
Q

What is Pulmonary Oedema?

A

Accumulation of fluid in the lung interstitium +/- alveolar spaces

23
Q

What kind of defect is pulmonary oedema and subsequently what type of spirometry does it show?

A

Restrictive

24
Q

What causes pulmonary oedema?

A

ncreased hydrostatic pressure

Cellular injury to alveolar lining cells or alveolar endothelium from localised pneumonia or ARDS
