Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis Flashcards
What is pneumoconiosis?
Lung disease caused by mineral dust exposure
How does a simple pneumoconiosis present
Abnormal CXR but no impairment of lung function
How does a complicated pneumoconiosis present?
Progressive fibrosis
Restrictive pattern, breathlessness
What is Caplan’s Syndrome?
Association between rheumatoid arthritis, pneumoconiosis and pulmonary rheumatoid nodules
How is Caplan’s syndrome treated?
Symptomatic
What is seen on CXR for Caplan’s?
Bilateral peripheral nodules
What may be needed to diagnose Caplan’s?
CT with needle biopsy
What are complications of Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis?
Caplan’s Syndrome
Progressive Massive Fibrosis
What is Progressive massive fibrosis?
Due to progression of pneumoconiosis - fibrotic masses of 1-10 cm
What does progressive massive fibrosis cause?
Progressive dyspnoea
Fibrosis
Eventually cor pulmonate
Where are fibrotic masses seen in progressive massive fibrosis?
Upper zone on CXR
What is Berylliosis?
Pneumoconiosis caused by exposure to beryllium, aerospace manufacturing
How is Pneumoconiosis managed?
Avoid exposure to coal dust
Claim compensation
How does Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis typically present?
Usually asymptotic
Co-existing bronchitis is common
What is seen on a CXR for Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis?
Upper lobe round opacities
