Plantar Fasciitis Flashcards
Definition of plantar fasciitis
Overuse condition resulting in inflammation of plantar fascia
Plantar fasciitis is due to
Overuse/stress on plantar fascia, microtearing at calcaneal attachments
Plantar fascia usually occurs in people over the age of?
40 years
Attachments
Calcaneal tuberosity + merges into Planter surface of metatarophalangeal
GN/SOL control
Shock absorption when walking running
Fat pad
Used to cover plantar fascia and to cushion calcaneus during gait cycle
What Is Pes cavus
High arch
Having pes cavus will
Decrease shock absorbing qualities. Soleus will compensate by increasing activity create more stress on Planter Fascia + calcaneal tendon
- bone spurs may form
Causes of Plantar fasciitis
Overuse- over training, running on hard surfaces, prolonged standing
Predisposing factors of plantar fasciitis
-Poor Biomechanics, pronation/supination of feet or excessive hip rotation while walking
-short/tight GN/SOL
-improper foot wear
-weight gain- pregnancy
Medical treatment for Plantar Fasciitis
-Anti-Inflammatory
-corticosteroid injection
-rest
-avoidance of activities
-surgery is rare
What can happen if you have to many corticosteroid injections
May cause fat pad atrophy
Symptom picture plantar fasciitis
-Unilateral or bilateral
-slow onset, with no history of injury or trauma
-edema
-pain first few steps in the morning
-Pain worse during pre-swing + climbing stairs
- pain lessens after 30 mins of activity, increases 2-3 hours later
-pain felt in calcaneus (heel) may extend to medial border of Plantar Fascia
-pes planus, pes cavus, Achilles tendonitis often present
Contraindications
Friction avoided in acute inflammation, clt taking Anti-Inflammatory or repeated corticosteroid injections in plantar fascia
Pes planus
Flat foot arch
