Hypermobility Flashcards
When someone has hypermobility in only 1 joint what is usually the cause?
Trauma
Hypermobility ranges from
Mild laxity to joint instability
Hypermobility + compensatory weakness
A hypermobile joint next to a hypomobile joint
Physiological hypermobility
Occurs in certain body types, occupation or pregnancy
Physiological hypermobility
Body type
Ectomorphic (lean slender body build with slight muscular development, difficulty building muscle)
Physiological hypermobility
Occupations
Gymnast/dancers (strive to develope more flexibility)
Physiological hypermobility
Pregnancy
Hormone relaxin is secreted to allow joints to become hypermobile for labor
-remain hypermobile up to 6 months post
Predisposed conditions
●rheumatoid arthritis
●ehler-danlos syndrom
●Marfans syndrom
Rheumatoid arthritis
Autoimmune disorder, immune system attacking healthy body tissue, destroys connective tissue
Ehler-Danlos syndrom
Inherited connective tissue disorder, collagen proteins have defects
Marfans syndrom
Inherited connective tissue disorder, effects elastin
Causes of hypermobility
●compensation - due to hypomobility or postural dysfunctions
●increased flexibility- body type, occupation
●hormone influences- relaxin secreted during pregnancy
●joint trauma- Sprain/dislocation
●pathology/conditions- predisposing factors
