Overuse Injuries Flashcards
Definition of overuse Injuries
Any repeated activity (occupational/recreationa) occurs when repetitive microtraumas overload a tissues ability to repair itself
Where can an overuse injury occur
Muscles, tendons, ligaments, Fascia and bone
Activities with an overuse Injury will?
Create an inflammatory response
Inflammation of overuse Injuries from activities
Laying down/tearing/remodeling of scar tissue
Continuing activities of an overuse Injuries after inflammation occurred
Continuing the activities tears the remodeling of scar tissue, immature collagen is laid down over + over, reducing tissue strength + ROM
2 main causes of overuse Injuries
•Extrinsic
•Intrinsic
What is Extrinsic
Increase in intensity of activity
Describe Extrinsic overuse causes
A sudden change, inadequate Rest, improper shoes/equipment, faulty techniques, posture +nutrition
Describe Intrinsic
Postural dysfunctions, muscle imbalance/weakness, lack of flexibility
Symptom picture of overuse Injuries
- usually progressive-initially acute to chronic- or no acute stage
- discomfort at first after activity- progresses to pain during + after activity
- inflammation is chronic
- pain + decrease ROM
- chronically-weakness in mms
-compensating structures
