Plant Structures Flashcards
1
Q
Plant Organs and Functions
A
Roots: absorbs water and minerals from the soil
Stems: transports mineral/nutrients around the plant
Leaves: get sunlight for photosynthesis
Flowers: Reproductive Organs
Fruit: reproduces reproductive cells and protects it
Cones: reproduces reproductive organs in non-flowery plants
2
Q
Physiological Processes:
A
- Photosynthesis: Process by which plants and other organisms use sunlight to create food from Carbon Dioxide and Water
- Cellular Respiration: process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen
- Transpiration: process where plants absorb water through the roots and then give off water vapor through pores in their leaves
- Reproduction: process by which new individual organisms “offspring” are produced
3
Q
Plant tissues:
A
- Meristematic Tissue: Place where new cells are formed, causing the roots to become longer
- Ground Tissue: Water and Minerals move through the tissue into the center of the roots. Some of the food made during photosynthesis is stored here
- Dermal Tissue: The roots epidermis (outermost layer) perform the functions of protection and absorbtion
- Vascular Tissue: Transports food and water through the point

Q
Plant Structures:
A
- Cambium: cellular plant tissue from which pholem, xylem or cork grows by division
- Guard Cell: Special Cells around the Stomata that control their opening and closing
- Pholem: transports food and nutrients
- Seed: nourishment for the embryo, dispersal to a new location & dormancy during unfavorable conditions
- Stomata: Small opening in the epidermis that allows carbon dioxide, oxygen and water move in and out of the leaf
- Xylem: Transports Water
