Natural Selection Flashcards
1
Q
3 types of natural selection:
A
- Directional: Bigger Beaks have the advantage, so their population increases
- Stabilizing: medium size breaks have the advantage, so their population increases
- Disruptive: Small and large beaks have the advantage so their population increases. Medium has the disadvantage, so their population decreases
2
Q
What is genetic drift?
A
Some individuals survive by luck and reproduced. The strongest don’t necessarily survive.
3
Q
What is bottleneck effect?
A
A disease or disaster causes the population to decrease, individuals survive by chance
4
Q
What is founder effect?
A
Small group of a population migrated to a new area by chance and survives
5
Q
Reproductive Isolation
A
As organisms continue to evolve, they are no longer able to reproduce with similar species
6
Q
Evolution by natural selection
A
“Survival of the fittest”
Individuals that are better suited to their environment
7
Q
What are Mutations?
A
Changes in the DNA sequence could be either good or bad
