Thermal Energy Formula?
In Book
Thermal Energy =
Mass x Specific Latent Heat

K is?
Spring Constant
L is?
Specific Latent Heat
Spring Constant Formula?
Spring Constant (K) =
Force (F)
———
Extension (X),
Force measured in Newtons and extension measured in Meters,
Spring constant measured in N/m.
Link Between Force and Extension?
Larger force is needed to cause a bigger extension,
More work needed to be done to cause a larger extension,
The force is gravitational force.
How To Find Word Done Or Energy Stored On A Graph?
You calculate the area under the linear section of your force-extension graph,
Do this up to the value of force given.
Linear Means?
Straight line,
We see this on a graph of force-extension before the elastic limit.
Elastic Limit?
This is the point the spring can be stretched to,
If you stretch it past this point, the spring will not return to its original state,
This means the work done is equal to the energy in the ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY STORE.
Spring Constant?
Force needed to produce an extension of 1 metre,
Symbol is K.
Specific Heat Capacity?
Amount of energy needed to increase temperature of 1kg of substance by 1 degree.
Specific Latent Heat?
Amount of energy to make 1kg of substance change state.
Triangle Means?
Change In
How Is A Stiffer Spring Shown On Graph?
A steeper line.
How Is A Rubber Band Shown On. A Graph?
Linear then curves right and then curves upward.
Elastic Definition?
When stretched, it will return to its original shape when the forces are removed.
Investigating Densities - Core Practical?
We used a displacement can filled with water and a measuring cylinder,
We placed the object into the displacement can,
The amount of water displaced by the object and in the measuring cylinder is the volume of the object,
We can then find the density by Mass / Volume.

Thermal Energy?
Energy stored in the movement of particles that make up substances.
Potential Energy Stores?
How much energy the object has stored,
Used for elastic, kinetic movement, etc.
Breaking Intermolecular Bonds?
When you heat a solid, energy is being transferred to potential energy stores,
This energy causes the particles to vibrate or move faster,
When a substance boils or melts, the temperature does not increase because the energy is being used to break intermolecular bonds.
Forming Intermolecular Bonds?
The temperature of a substance does not decrease when the particles are forming bonds,
This is because bonds ares forming between particles and the substances temperature doesn’t change until all bonds are formed.
Kelvin To Celsius?
Subtract 273,
When K is 0, C is -273.
Celsius To Kelvin?
Add 273,
When K is 0, C is -273.
Change In Thermal Energy Formula?
Change In Thermal Energy =
Mass x Specific Heat Capacity x Temperature Change,
Mass - kg,
Specific Heat Capacity - J/kg Degrees Celsius,
Temperature Change - Degrees Celsius.
Electrically Transferring Energy?
Change doing work against a resistance,
This could be heating and radiation.
Closed System?
Doesn’t give energy out of take any energy in.
Mechanically Transferring Energy?
This could be pushing or stretching,
Making a movement on an object.
