Physics introducing sound waves Flashcards
What is a longitudinal wave?
Oscillations go in the same direction as the wave.
What is an example of a longitudinal wave?
Sound
What is a transverse wave?
Wave energy is going up and out but oscillations go left to right
What is an example of a transverse wave?
Light
Why does sound need a medium (solid/liquid/gas )to travel through?
It needs particles to vibrate
Why does sound travel quicker in a solid?
Particles are close together
Why does sound travel slower in a gas?
Particles are spreaded out
How is a sound wave produced?
Object that are vibrating and makes the air molecules bump into each other
Why can’t sound travel through a vacuum?
There are no particles in a vacuum
How long does sound travel from a solid, liquid and gas?
340m/s in gasses, 1500m/s in liquids and 5000m/s in solids
Definition of frequency?
Number of waves past a point in a second
What is the definition of wavelength?
Distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next
What is the definition of peak?
Top of the wave
What is the bottom of the wave called?
Trough
