Chemistry combustion Flashcards
What is another word for combustion?
Burning
How does combustion happen?
A fuel reacts with oxygen and energy is transferred to the surroundings as heat and light
When is methane used?
Bunsen burners, gas Cooker’s and boilers
What is hydrocarbon?
A compound made of hydrogen and carbon
What is the formula of hydrocarbon?
CH4
What is a fuel?
A material that burns to release useful energy as heat
examples of fossil fuels( fuels that are non-renewable)
diesel, coal and methane, from the sea and ground
What does non-renewable mean?
Cannot be replaced once they have been used
What are examples of renewable fuels?
Cooking oil and chicken faeces
What will future oils be using?
Hydrogen
What would the future oil word equation be?
Hydrogen + oxygen —> water
What are the products of combustion?
Fuel, oxygen and carbon dioxide
What is complete combustion?
Burning hydrocarbons react with oxygens and produce energy, water and carbon dioxide. There is a full supply of oxygen
Wat is incomplete combustion?
Not all the atoms of carbon can fully react with oxygen which leads to production of CO (Carbor monoxide) and C (unburnt carbon molecules) and some CO2 will also produce. There is limited supply of oxygen
