Chemistry polymers Flashcards
What is a polymer?
A substance with very long molecules
What is a polymer molecule?
Has identical groups of atoms, repeated many times
What does polymer molecules look like?
Are always big and heavy, this means the melt high temperatures than substances with smaller molecules
What are examples of natural polymers?
Wool, starch and rubber (Plants and animals make natural polymers)
How are synthetic polymers made?
They are made by chemical substances
There are two types of polythene, what are they?
LDPE (low density polythene)and HDPE (high density polythene)
How are LDPE look and feel?
Flexible and strong
How does LDPE flexible and strong?
Molecules slide over each over
How ones HDPE feel like?
Strong and flexible but harder than LDPE
Examples of when HDPE will be used?
Since its a smooth surface, it can be used in artificial knee joints
What does flammable mean?
Can catch fire easily
What does biohazard mean?
Contains dangerous organisms such as bacteria
What is the meaning of irritant?
Can irritate eyes, skin and lungs
What is he meaning of corrosive?
May dissolve or bur materials including skin
What is the meaning of toxic?
Can be poisonous
